Surgical Technician

This is a surgical leadership position. We are looking for a CVT with advanced surgical and anesthesia experience. Full time position (open to candidates interested in P/T)

Boston Veterinary Specialists is one of Boston’s most established private specialty practices, providing specialized veterinary surgery for over 25 years. We work closely with referring veterinarians and pet owners to provide specialty care in a timely manner, with compassion and exceptional service. We care for canines and felines providing such services as: Soft Tissue Surgery * Cancer Surgery * Surgical Treatment of Orthopedic Disease & Injury and much more. Dr. Abigail Mariano joined our team within the past year and we are looking to add to our “Talented Technical Team.” You will love our clients, patients, and our team of doctors, technicians, and associates.

Job Responsibilities:

The role of the surgical technician includes, but is not limited to:

  • Performing all aspects of patient induction, patient surgical preparation, anesthetic monitoring and recovery
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain all surgical equipment
  • Assist surgeons with scrub in procedures
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments
  • Able to develop anesthetic protocols and calculate and administer medications
  • Contribution to the spirit and pride of the organization in that each employee is part of a team practicing excellent medicine with a high standard of patient, client and RDVM care

Tasks Include:

  • Take and record medical history (medications, supplements, diet and allergies) of incoming patients
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia patients with ASA levels I-IV
  • Proficient in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, advanced diagnostic imaging, troubleshooting equipment and use of a ventilator
  • Collect and record vitals
  • Collect and prepare samples for outside lab and/or perform in house on lab analyzers
  • Call clients with lab results
  • Apply bandage(s) and care
  • Administer medications oral or injectable (sq, iv, im)
  • Advanced Medical knowledge of veterinary medicine, surgical procedures, and patient care
  • Maintain surgery and treatment inventory and place orders as needed
  • Manage workflow to ensure appointments and surgeries are completed in a timely manner
  • Utilize Cornerstone software to complete medical records and produce documentation for clients; create and explain estimates to clients as needed
  • Educate clients on preventative care recommendations and discharge/post-op care recommendations.
  • Takes an active role in training team members on the floor

Qualifications:

  • Certification is strongly desired (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) with at least two + years Vet Tech Experience; Lead Vet Tech experience a plus.
  • Advanced anesthesia and analgesia experience with ability to train others
  • Must be fluent in general hospital operations; telephone operations, service and fees, estimates, patient care and general hospital flow.
  • Must be professional and an independent worker with ability to multi-task and solve problems efficiently in a fast paced environment and can prioritize and delegate as needed
  • Flexibility and the ability to adjust to a changing environment and handle stress with a calm demeanor
  • History of strong customer service / client skills
  • Able to lift 40 pounds and stoop, bend, kneel and stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Computer literacy skills

Required:

  • Two years of veterinary technician experience; CVT strongly preferred
  • Advanced anesthesia and analgesia experience

Overnight Veterinary Tech
Part-time

Care will be for Post-op surgical patients and any non critical (stable) general practice hospitalized patients only . You will not care for boarding patients, we do not board.

Technician will round with Sx tech or Ward nurse beginning of shift and end of shift to ensure consistent continued care of our patient(s)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring patients IV catheter and IV fluid administration
  • Bandage care
  • Provide oral and injectable meds as prescribed
  • Take/document vitals (TPR)
  • Feed / Water / Bedding
  • Assist patient up and around (sling support, etc.)
  • Knowledge of procedure performed, medications (including their effect) and operation of hospital equipment (pumps/monitors)

Qualifications:

  • Reliable
  • Must be alert and attentive to our patients recovering
  • Provide the very best care for our patients
  • Technician must have strong patient care skills and experience
  • Veterinary medical knowledge relating to post sx care, medications, monitoring and lab equipment
  • Must have great communication skill(s) with the team
  • Must have two plus years of Vet Tech experience and be dependable
